Key term: PRODUCT TRIAL - when consumers buy a good for the first time and assess whether or not they want to buy it again.
During a product trial, companies use several different methods in order to raise awareness of a particular product and try to get customers to try it. These are:
Advertising - Using various forms of media to inform customers of the product
Free publicity - Getting people to talk about the product. This could be through public relations (PR) which is promotion of a positive image about a product or business through giving information about the product to the general public, other businesses or to the press. Or it could be through viral marketing, which is getting individuals to spread a message about the product through their social network sites likes Facebook/Twitter
Free samples - Giving away samples of the product in shops/magazines etc
User testing - Offering a test trial (cars/computer games)
Low trial prices - This could be through penetration pricing which is setting an initial low price to attract customers. This is in order to gain market share. The company may then raise the price.
Targeting trade buyers (buyers of goods which then sell those goods on to consumers or other buyers) - This is where a business will target wholesalers (businesses which buy in bulk from a manufacturer or other supplier and then sell in smaller quantities to retailers) or sell to retailers (businesses which specialise in selling small quantities to the consumer).
