Some businesses believe that pay is the strongest motivator of their workforce. These businesses will use pay systems that directly link pay to the amount of work achieved - piece rate pay. On the other hand, some businesses believe that workers need to be motivated in a number of different ways.
A business can only have a limited influence on the motivation of its workers. This is because motivation is something that also comes from within an individual worker. Some workers are more motivated than others. How much motivation comes from within workers themselves and how much comes from the environment which a business creates is a matter of debate. A good business can have a significant impact on the motivation of its staff. Working in teams where there are motivated workers also increases the motivation of less committed staff. However, ultimately, there will always be differences in motivation of workers in the same business.
